Bulgarian One Health Journal is an open access scientific journal, issued by the Risk Assessment Center on Food Chain, Ministry of Agriculture of Bulgaria.
Established in 2023, it aims to give a platform to national and international scientific fellow to share their research where the originality elements are mandatory.
Bulgarian One Health Journal accepts scientific manuscripts covering all aspects in the area of animal health, plant health, public health and ecology.
Articles in the online journal are published in English language.
The Journal main goals are to:
- present international and national policies on food chain,
- publish scientific, popular science, review and informational materials,
- be a forum for discussing health issues.
The journal is intended for teachers, university professors, students, postgraduates and doctoral students, specialists in all health fields and grades.
Animal Health
Food safety starts on the farm, which is why animal health and welfare is a major component of food safety. Animal health protection and animal disease prevention serve to protect public health, animal husbandry, food security and food supply, rural economies and the environment. The concept of animal health covers animal diseases as well as the interaction between animal welfare, human health, environmental protection and food safety. A multidisciplinary approach and cooperation with experts and Member States is needed to conduct risk assessment in the field of animal health and welfare. This section focuses on increasing animal health knowledge to improve animal production and yield. Areas of focus are veterinary services, animal living conditions, natural animal environments and humane animal care. The journal will take care to provide an environment for publication of research projects and scientific articles of established scientists in the field of veterinary medicine.
Public Health
Current topics related to improving the health of the population and preventing diseases through early diagnosis will be published in the public health section. Topics such as food safety, antimicrobial resistance, zoonoses and zoonotic agents affecting human health will be covered. Public health requires a multidisciplinary approach, including epidemiology, parasitology, virology, microbiology, biostatistics, social sciences, and health services management. Other important fields include environment, climate change, behavioral health and health education. This journal provides rapid publication of original papers, reviews, and potential discussion papers embracing this collaborative spirit.
Plant Health
Both public health and the health of the planet depend on plants. Plants make up 80% of the food we eat and 98% of the oxygen we breathe and yet they are under threat. Up to 40% of food crops are lost due to plant pests and diseases every year. This is affecting both food security and agriculture, the main source of income for vulnerable rural communities. Climate change and human activities are altering ecosystems and damaging biodiversity while creating new niches for pests to thrive. International travel and trade, which has tripled in volume in the last decade, is also spreading pests and diseases. The introduction and spread of plant pests, such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and insects, among food crops, natural vegetation and landscape plants is a serious threat that can have far-reaching economic, social and environmental consequences. Plant pests are often introduced to areas previously unaffected through plant imports. One of the key tasks of the section of the journal is to publish science reports, reviews and articles from wide-range of specialists and the most current scientific knowledge available in order to provide information to wide public. This section of the journal is about applied plant health and crop protection and publishes new scientific information to enhance the health, management, and production of agricultural and horticultural crops of economic importance.
Ecology
Environment section publish high quality and novel information within the broad field of 'Public and Environmental Health Sciences'. Coverage includes, but is not limited to, the following research topics: Public Health and Health Impact Assessment, Environmental Epidemiology; Environmental Health and Risk Assessment, Environmental Chemistry; Environmental Toxicology and Biodiversity, Environmental Processes; Environmental Technology for Environmental Health Protection. In particular, the following specific topics are welcome (non-exhaustive list), as long as they have strong environmental health applicability and relevance and if they discuss 'interactions between the environment and humans' in the broadest sense. This section of the magazine gives solutions to overcome the gap between those who develop solutions to pressing problems ranging from pollution to greener transport and the practitioners tasked with putting ideas into practice.
